The septet that comprises the latest fiery incarnation of Trey Anastasio Band mixes the new and the old in both band members and repertoire. Original TAB members Russ Lawton (drums), Tony Markellis (bass) and Ray Paczkowski (keys) are joined by horn section Jennifer Hartswick (trumpet and vocals), Russell Remington (tenor saxophone and flute), and newcomer Natalie
Cressman (trombone and vocals). Recorded live at the legendary Tabernacle in Atlanta, GA, this set runs through such classics as a ripping 'Sand' and a sweetly sung 'Drifting' and pairs them with new TAB compositions including 'Show of Life' (co-written with Steve 'Dude of Life' Pollack) and a horn laden arrangement of Phish's 'Alaska'. TAB at the Tab ends on a high note with Jennifer Hartwick's killer trumpet chops on a raucous cover of Zeppelin's 'Black Dog.'
---------------------------------------------------------------------
When guitarist Trey Anastasio isn’t touring with his revitalized Phish bandmates, he’s often pursuing his devoted solo projects, that while sharing some similarities to the popular Phish sound, and even includes a few crossover songs, is a totally different vehicle for Anastasio’s guitar.
Nothing comes close to the cohesive jamming of Phish, but the Trey Anastasio Band is a perfectly fine holdover for fans waiting for the legendary jam band to return to the stage, and this live album sampler is a perfect example as to why.
TAB at the TAB is a sampling of songs from the band’s Feb. 27, 2010 performance at the Tabernacle in Atlanta. The only strike against the album is the fact that it doesn’t include the entire show’s set, something I could only imagine exist in the same quality if these selected songs do.

But regardless, TAB at the TAB is worth listening to, as Anastasio’s other band does give him a few more toys to play with, including a full horn section, making beloved Phish songs like “Sand†interesting, unique and a much different experience than the Phish version.
But the one thing that does remain true throughout most of the album is the fact that “Machine Gun Trey†is alive and well, Phish or not. Anastasio absolutely rips through jams like the aforementioned “Sand,†a 10-minute version of “Money, Love and Change†and a cover of Led Zeppelin’s “Black Dog.†The album is a generous selection of various styles of Anastasio, from the already mentioned explosive jams to slower ballads like “Show of Life,†which has since become part of Phish’s live repertoire. The album even touches on the sillier side of music, with “Windora Bug,†which has bassist Tony Markellis asking us “Is that a wind, or a bug?†Again, it would have been so much more amazing for the fans if this album featured the full two set show, which include Anastasio playing a few acoustic Phish tunes and an encore of the always dazzling “First Tube.†Nonetheless, the album is still a decent offering of TAB tunes that fans will enjoy.

TAB at the Tab, is a collection of songs recorded live by Trey Anastasio Band
(TAB) at the legendary Tabernacle in Atlanta. The album - recorded on February 27, 2010 - captures the band at the peak of its powers and includes live renditions of classic TAB songs and numerous new compositions. Building on 2009's stripped-down four-piece lineup - lead guitarist/vocalist Trey Anastasio, Russ Lawton (drums), Tony Markellis (bass) and Ray
Paczkowski (keyboards) - TAB added horns back into the mix for its most recent foray. Longtime TAB members Russell Remington (tenor saxophone and flute) and Jennifer Hartswick (trumpet and vocals) were joined by newcomer Natalie Cressman (trombone and vocals), just 18 and on her first national tour. Natalie is the daughter of former band member Jeff Cressman. "It's how I've always imagined this band," says Anastasio. "The goal was for a unified sound in the tradition of Bob Marley or King Sunny Ade, where the different instruments are really dancing with each other. And I think we achieved that." Not only do the instruments dance with one another, the vocal harmonies are exquisite also. Anastasio, Hartswick and Cressman are a formidable combination, from the scintillating opener "Money, Love and Change" to the
tender "Words to Wanda" (marking the song's first appearance on record).
Tony Markellis joins in on vocals on fan favorite "Windora Bug," another song
making its recording debut, and Hartswick delivers a blistering lead vocal on a
cover of Led Zeppelin's "Black Dog." The swampy "Alaska," a song first played on TAB's 2009 tour that has since crossed over to Phish's repertoire, is re-imagined with an exuberant horn
arrangement written by Greg Adams, formerly of Tower of Power, and Don Hart, Anastasio's frequent collaborator, created horn arrangements for six tracks, including the new song "Valentine." "Show of Life," a moving meditation on life's beauty and brevity, is a recent
composition from Anastasio and Steve Pollak ("The Dude of Life"). "We met for lunch on the corner of 94th and Amsterdam on the Upper West Side and Steve showed up with a manila folder full of lyrics," recalls Anastasio. "I have the FourTrack app on my iPhone, which is like a little recording studio, so we each put one ear bud in and then we started singing into the microphone. We went out into the street and we're singing bass lines and there are people walking by - it's unbelievable. I hadn't written a song with Steve in quite a long time, so that was a real thrill." Other highlights include early TAB classics "Sand" and "Drifting" plus the infrequently heard "Goodbye Head," a complex composition from Anastasio's Bar 17.
